Durham police looking for clues in string of small fires

Durham police are seeking the public's help in identifying who is responsible for setting several fires in the area of Ninth Street and Hillsborough Road since Sept. 1.

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are seeking the public's help in identifying who is responsible for setting several fires in the area of Ninth Street and Hillsborough Road since Sept. 1. 

No one has been injured in the fires, which have been set in dumpsters, trash cans and donation bins near several building. 

Police said most of the fires have been set between 11:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. 

On Sept. 1 just before 1 a.m., someone set fire to the doorway of a business at the intersection of Ninth Street and Green Street. Three days later, on Sept. 4, someone set fire to a trash container near Blue Ridge Realty on Ninth Street. 

On Sept. 10, police responded to two fires on Ninth Street. At 11:52 p.m., a fire was set in a dumpster near E.K. Powe Elementary School on Ninth Street. Thirty minutes later, another fire was set in two trash cans at Dales Indian Cuisine on Ninth Street. 

Two more fires were set after midnight on Monday. Police said the first was set at a clothing donation bin at Blu Seafood and Barner, at the corner of Ninth Street and Hillsborough Road. A trash can was also set on fire near the UPS on Ninth Street.
