DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police were investigating a fatal wreck Monday morning after finding a car in a creek near the intersection of N.C. Highway 54 and Hope Valley Road.

A passing driver noticed a car partially submerged beside N.C. 54 at about 7:15 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a Honda Accord overturned in a swampy area, and the driver, Nelson Corea, 25, of Durham, was dead nearby.

Investigators said it appears that Corea was westbound on N.C. 54 sometime after 12:30 a.m. when his car ran off the road, struck a guardrail and overturned in the swampy area. He wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle, they said.

Authorities shut down N.C. 54 between Garrett and Parkridge roads after discovering the wreck.
