Durham police investigate shooting behind police headquarters

Posted October 6, 2015

— A man died Tuesday morning in a shooting behind police headquarters in downtown Durham, authorities said.

The shooting happened at about 11 a.m. after authorities said a car crashed into another car, hit a wall and ended up in the headquarters parking lot. Police said Jeremy Darnell Artis, 21, of Marietta, Ga., got out of the car and ran toward Gordon Street, where he shot himself. Officials said the man died from what appears to be a self-inflicted wound.

Authorities said a woman remained in the car during the incident. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was later released.

Gunfire was not exchanged between the man and police officers, investigators said.

Vickers Avenue was closed between Chapel Hill Street and Jackson Street following the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing.

So Jyllian, if we follow your impeccable logic, taking one's life with a Knife, should result in the headline "Durham Police investigate STABBING behind Police Headquarters". What if that person tied a shoelace around their own neck? Should the headline read "Durham Police investigate Lynching behind Police headquarters".

My point is simple.. Why does the media insist of sticking lame buzz-words into headlines for otherwise mundane stories? Wouldn't it be refreshing to see a headline that actually describes what happened "man commits Suicide, or Man dies from self inflicted wounds". Too boring I guess?

A suicide is a shooting when the person uses a gun to kill themselves Einstein.

When did Suicide become a Shooting?

Statistically speaking, 75% of all deaths by gun are in fact suicides. One might think that suicide should not be lumped under the Gun Violence.
Maybe we should add some new Violence categories, just to be sure that we include all forms of Suicide. How does Prescription Pill Overdose Violence sound? How about Violence by Hanging? Self-Poisoning Violence? and my favorite, Jumping off a Tall Bridge Violence...
I suspect that if all guns were banned today, people will still kill themselves, one way or the other.
