Durham police ID woman found dead on trail

Posted May 8, 2014

— Police on Thursday identified the 37-year-old woman who was found dead early Wednesday on Rocky Creek Trail in south Durham.

According to investigators, Shontina Nakeisha Williams, of Durham, was found by a passer-by at about 6:15 a.m. near the Elmira Avenue entrance.

Authorities have not released any information about how Williams may have died, but a 911 caller told authorities there was a lot of blood.

"I don't know if she's dead or not, but she's laid out with a lot of blood on her chest," the caller said.

Less than a mile long, Rocky Creek Trail runs south of Fayetteville Street in Durham and ends at Dakota Street just west of N.C. Highway 55.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Police are asking anyone who saw Williams late Tuesday or early Wednesday to call 919-560-4440 or Crime Stoppers at 919-63-1200.

CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.

Homeless people are often prey to other homeless people for such items as cash, drugs, etc. Of course, in this case, we don't have enough information to know why this poor soul was murdered. May she rest in peace.

I hope her death was quick and as painless as possible, and that her loved ones are comforted by a quick, factual resolution of this case.

Regardless of her social status/profession...there is a killer out there. Don't know about you guys, but my preference is that they are caught.

How do you know she was homeless?

Awww, prayers for her loved ones, regardless the circumstances, and that whomever did this is caught quickly and is dealt the FULL weight of the justice system.

It's not fabricated. You can find it as well as her prostitution history online very easily.

I haven't heard it confirmed that the deceased was homeless, but if so, you are right that an obvious motive does not spring to mind. There have been several incidents of attacks on the homeless perpetrated by bored teens. The homeless are easy targets b/c they are so disenfranchised from society and they often suffer from mental illnesses and/or addictions that make them less likely to report assaults. People who would attack them are indeed cruel, as they likely see them as less than human and less worthy of respect.

Similarly, if she is homeless, there will likely be less public pressure to pursue this case very long than if she were a well-to-do soccer mom out for a jog, so if initial leads do not pan out, this case may go cold.
