— Durham police arrested three men on armed robbery charges Thursday after a brief chase near the Duke University campus.

Officers linked a red van stopped for a traffic violation to the report of a robbery at an apartment complex at 3600 Tremont Drive, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

When police stopped the van near the intersection of Science Drive and N.C. Highway 751, the occupants jumped out and ran. Three were caught shortly thereafter and were being questioned by investigators Thursday afternoon, Michael said.

A fourth suspect escaped into the woods near the R. David Thomas Executive Conference Center on Science Drive, Duke campus security said. He was still at large by late afternoon when police called off their search.

Authorities did not release the names or descriptions of any of the suspects.

Why on earth would they call off their search, with one armed robber still on the loose?

There we go thinking like a civilian. Let's take an obvious approach in answering this question...um...maybe it was just easier to question the other suspects that were caught or maybe after so long you have to think about heat exhaustion just like you or I would complain about after exerting ourselves in this one hundred degree weather. Officers are not machines and sometimes it better to work smarter and not harder.

Its called wayyyyyy to big of an area to search combined with it being wayyyy to hot in a section of woods that is wayyy to big.

They had the police dogs on the trail so I guess if they lost his scent then he got away. Good job for the dogs though :) Hope they are back in the AC with some cold water to drink.

So how long should they search for an unknown person? If they haven't been found within 30 minutes to an hour, all you're doing is wasting time cause they have blended back into the population and the "trail has grown cold". Its better to interview the other 3, get his name, THEN go get him once you know who he is.

They called off the search because it became apparent he had left the area.

3 more thugs headed to prison to be cared for by the taxpayers of nc,or perhaps they will get a plea bargain with a lighter sentence where they can be back out on the streets where they can rob again and maybe next time include a fatality or 2.
