DURHAM, N.C. — It wasn't a normal day on the streets Wednesday for one Durham police officer.

Traffic Services Officer Gabriel Munter was finishing up an accident report on southbound Interstate 85 near the Club Boulevard exit shortly before 9 a.m. when a car pulled up behind his cruiser and a frantic man told him that his wife was having a baby.

Munter grabbed a pair of gloves from the trunk of his cruiser and ran to help deliver a baby girl.

“The baby was coming out. I scooped up the baby and took the cord from around her neck," he said. "I bundled the baby in towels and put her on the mother’s chest."

K-9 Officer J.J. McDonough then arrived and assisted Munter. who called the incident "the coolest thing that has happened to me on the job."

Paramedics checked out the mother and baby, who were both doing well.
