DURHAM, N.C. — With just a week before Christmas, the Durham Rescue Mission said Wednesday that it is still in urgent need of donations.

Robert Tart, with the nonprofit, said it still needs 6,000 toys for its annual toy giveaway, especially items, such as games, books, cars and dolls for children between the ages of 10 and 12.

So far, most donations have been for younger children.

"It is just so heartbreaking for a child to come wait in line, go through all the drama of waiting and then go home empty-handed," Tart said. "These children that come here often aren't going to get a Christmas anywhere else."

Donations are still being accepted at the Mission's church building, at 1201 E. Main St.
