DURHAM, N.C. — Daniel Curia, who has served as Durham’s interim fire chief since December, has been named permanently to the post, city officials said Monday.

Curia joined the Durham Fire Department in 1990 and served as a firefighter until 1997. He was promoted through the ranks to deputy chief in 2008.

Curia holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration and a master’s degree in leadership with an emphasis in disaster preparedness and executive fire leadership.

“We’re pleased to have Dan continue on as a member of our public protection team,” City Manager Tom Bonfield said. “Dan brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table with 23 years of service as a city employee, and since preventing loss of life and property is the main goal for our fire department, we will continue to call upon Dan’s extensive expertise to ensure we do just that.”

Curia began serving as permanent chief on Friday, Bonfield said.
