DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man who shot and killed his toddler as part of a murder-suicide had alcohol in his system at the time, according to a medical examiner’s report obtained by WRAL News on Wednesday.

Police found Tyrone Xavier Hester lying behind Building N at the Hampton Forest Apartments, at 901 Chalk Level Road, on May 7. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hester’s daughter, 22-month-old Tyaijah Destiny Hester, who had also been shot behind the building, was taken to Duke University Hospital. She was pronounced dead a short time later.

Tyaijah’s mother, LaToya Smith, said she had been fighting Tyrone Hester shortly before the shooting.
