DURHAM, N.C. — A 50-year-old Durham man died early Saturday after he was hit by a tractor-trailer when he stepped out into the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near the Barbee Road Bridge in Durham, police said.

According to investigators, Darryl Williams was hit at about 5:45 a.m. by a 2010 International ProStar tractor-trailer driven by Hoang Tran, of Liberty. Williams stepped into the highway from the right shoulder, where his car was parked, police said.

Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tran and a passenger in the tractor-trailer, Iran Elki, were not hurt.
