Durham man charged with attempted rape of female jogger

Durham officers responded around 4:15 p.m. after a female jogger called police and said she was attacked from behind near Englewood Avenue. The woman said a man knocked her to the ground, choked her and told her he had a knife.

"He came up behind me and grabbed me and pushed me on the ground and started choking me, and he told me to take off my pants," the woman said in a 911 call. "I kind of pushed him off and yelled at him. I thought somebody might be around."

"Definitely the fact that it was in the middle of the day is very upsetting," Vaughn said. "There's tons of people who exercise in this area all the time."

Vaughn said the jogger was following the rules woman are often told to keep themselves safe.

"It makes me mad honestly and makes me think we really need to stop telling women what not to do and start looking at why men are doing this," she said.

Kiper was charged with attempted first-degree rape, according to the Durham police department.

Court records show that Kiper was yelling and belligerent when officers first booked him in jail.

Kiper has several DWI charges pending, and told a judge on Tuesday that he has a problem with alcohol. He also said that he's worried about losing his son and his job in wake of the arrest.

"Whatever is going on with me, I need treatment; I need alcohol treatment," Kiper said.

​A judge on Tuesday denied Kiper's request to reduce his bond from $1 million. His next court date is June 7.
