— A Durham man is facing multiple charges after a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night on Old Chapel Hill Road, police said.

Thomas Stephen Bigelow, 61, was riding a 1981 Suzuki motorcycle when he was hit by a Nissan Sentra driven by Stanley Keitt, 37, at the intersection of Old Chapel Hill Road and Williamsburg Road at about 5 p.m., authorities said.

Bigelow suffered critical injuries and remains in the hospital.

Keitt was charged with felony hit and run, driving while his license was revoked, failure to yield right of way and driving left of center, police said. He was being held in the Durham County Jail under a $1 million bond.

Don't ask why he isn't charged with a DUI even though he was likely drunk. In NC the maximum sentence for felony hit an run is 2 years = legal fact. If a drunk person stops after hitting someone they would likely face a murder or attempted murder charge. This incentive for drunks in accidents to run has been brought to the attention of many legislators who apparently believe it's not an issue worth debate.

So basically he was not supposed to be driving and I bet he had no insurance. Now the guy in the hospital is stuck with medical bills and not able to work. Repeat offenders are priceless in Durham. Great use of that large court house building that just put these criminals back on the street so quickly.

I'm surprised there isn't a DWI included in the charges, because you'd have a hard time convincing me that he isn't drunk or high on something in that mugshot.
