DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man was arrested Saturday morning following a standoff in the 800 block of Springdale Drive, officials with the Durham Police Department said.

According to police, Saquan Evans, 31, assaulted a female just before 6 a.m. and then took his mother hostage inside the house and refused to come out.

After a standoff that lasted nearly four hours, hostage negotiators and Durham's selective enforcement team convinced Evans to come out. He and his mother were unharmed.

The woman Evans assaulted was taken to the hospital for treatment, but did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, police said.

Evans was questioned by Durham police late Saturday morning. He was later charged with assault by strangulation, habitual misdemeanor assault, second-degree kidnapping, assault on a female and assault inflicting injuries with minor present and taken to the Durham County jail.

Officers closed down several nearby streets and evacuated houses in the immediate vicinity during the incident.

No other information was released.
