Durham man arrested after chase, schools lockdown
Police arrested a Durham man Tuesday on robbery and domestic violence charges following a chase and lockdown of four nearby schools.

Darryl Wayne Stephens, 30, faces a slew of charges in connection with a Feb. 11 armed robbery at a convenience store on Hillsborough Road, a Feb. 28 kidnapping of a man from a Fayetteville Street parking lot and a domestic assault in November.
The U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force attempted to stop Stephens, whose car had been spotted as matching the suspect vehicle in the armed robbery, on Alston Avenue near Cecil Street around 12:40 p.m. A chase ensued and marshals followed the car for a short distance before losing sight of it.
A short time later, officers found the vehicle abandoned on Red Oak Avenue.
They surrounded the area and placed Hillside High School, Shepard Middle School, Fayetteville Street Elementary School and W.G. Pearson Elementary School on lockdown as a precaution while they searched for Stephens, police said.
He was found in a field behind Fayetteville Street Elementary School shortly before 1:30 p.m.
