— A Durham man is accused of severely beating his girlfriend's 1-year-old daughter.

Joshua Ray Royster, 24, hit the child until she was unconscious June 27 at a home at 1818 Majestic Drive, according to the arrest warrant.

The child suffered severe head trauma and had bruises on her face and body, the warrant stated. She was listed in critical condition Sunday at Duke University Hospital.

The child's mother said her boyfriend had previously always taken good care of her baby.

Royster was arrested Sunday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, assault of a child and inflicting serious bodily injury.

He was being held at the Durham County Jail under a $5 million bond. His first court appearance was set for Monday morning.

I believe I read in the article the child had on old injury that had healed.

That would mean this wasn't the first time.

Doesn't sound so good for the little one.

May ALL responsible be held as such. That little one deserved to be protected.

As of last night... the child was on life support and is not able to breath on her own. She has bruises on her stomach, head, arms and leg.
The uncle is defending his nephew and said there's no way he did this. Uuummm.....the child was with him at the time of the injury. Guess this was another "accident".
Yeah...right! This poor child was beat more than once!!
Praying for the child and family!!

Yes mother does need to be punished. It was her responsibility to ensure the safety of her child. Leaving the child with an irresponsible person is NOT above negligence.

If the child is okay, and is returned to a mother who will continue to make these mistakes, there is nothing gained, and the child will continue to be in constant danger.

As a single mom you have to be careful who you let around your child. I dated my currrent boyfriend for about eight months before he meet my daughter and I did not leave her alone with him until about a year and a half of dating I wonder how long she had knew this man before she let him keep her child. Just sad
