Durham library to distribute free bike helmets

Posted May 2

Right now is a great time for cycling for both adults and children, but a lot of kids are missing a key piece of safety gear when they ride: a helmet.

Durham County Library will give out free bike helmets starting this week at events at various locations this spring and summer.

The Bicycle Helmets and Safety Training Events are free and open to the public. Children who need helmets will be given new, high quality helmets, according to a press release.

Here's the schedule

  • Wednesday, May 3 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Stanford L. Warren Branch Library
  • Friday, June 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Southwest Regional Library
  • Friday, July 7 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Bragtown Library Family Literacy Center.

Kids should bring their bikes to the events. All riders must wear a helmet. During the programs, children will learn safe riding techniques through riding courses. For more information, call 919-560-0208.

Participating organizations include Durham Bike Co-op, Safe Kids, Durham County EMS, City of Durham Police Department, Durham County Office of the Sheriff and Durham County Library.
