Durham leaders name replacement for retiring sheriff

Posted October 10, 2011

— Durham County commissioners voted unanimously Monday to appoint Chief Deputy Mike Andrews to replace Sheriff Worth Hill, who announced last month that he would step down at the end of the year.

Andrews has been chief deputy for the past three years.

Hill was elected to his fifth term as sheriff last year and has said that retiring will allow him to spend more time with his ailing wife.

To Sherlock: With a name like "Sherlock" I thought maybe you would have known better. There will be an election... in 2014. But according to state law if an elected official steps down i.e. a Sheriff, then the county commissioners can appoint someone....there does not have to be an election until the next term which in this case will not be until 2014. Perhaps "SHERLOCK" needs more studying.

Chief Andrews has over 32 years with the Sheriff's Department and will continue to serve Durham County and it's citizens. He loves his community and is the right man for the job. It's rare that you see so many great character traits within one man.
    Be proud Durham County!!!!!!

Logical choice...this man knows the Sheriff's Office inside and out....does not make sense to bring in an outsider that knows "NOTHING" about this agency or its people. Andrews will do a good job because he will surround himself with good people
