Durham lakes open for the season

Little River and Lake Michie will open for the season this weekend. Durham parks has some special events planned to kick off the season, including an opportunity to learn about fishing.

Little River and Lake Michie, part of the Durham parks system, will officially open for the season this weekend.

The lakes are open 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday through Monday, starting this weekend through Nov. 10, for boating and fishing. According to Durham parks' website, Lake Michie has some of the finest largemouth bass in the region. 

To mark the start of the season, Durham Parks will host two events at Lake Michie on March 29.

There's "Go Fish" from noon to 3 p.m., March 29, when people of all ages are invited to learn fishing techniques, identification and other angling information. The cost is $5 to $11; supplies included. Pre-registration is required for this one.

From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., March 29, the Lake Grand Opening Celebration and cookout is free and open to the public. It will include activities such as paddle sports, games and prizes.

The events are held in partnership with Dicks Sporting Goods and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
