— Durham police on Friday identified the officer who shot himself in the hand.

According to the incident report, police were called to the home of Officer Mack Brantley Grady, 26, on Valley Run Monday evening after he shot himself in the hand.

Chief Jose Lopez said Brantley, who was off duty at the time, was cleaning his weapon when it went off.

Lopez said Brantley injured his left hand and was taken to Duke Hospital where he was treated and released.

Brantley has been a member of the Durham Police Department since July 2004.

After his hand heals up he should do a public service
video to show others what he did wrong so they will
    know not to do it.

Many semi autos will fire with the magazine removed.
Same for shotguns, you never know if there is one in the pipe.

one guy on the RTBKA forum shot himself in the leg when
cleaning his .45 colt. Not a pretty sight, could have lost the leg.

I agree with rlt....not much of a story. I also agree with some others here...why did Andy give him the bullet anyway?

Stuff like this happens every once in a while. This is more likely an accident than anything at all.

Anyone that is careless enough to shoot themselves does not need to be carrying a gun everyday. I sure wouldn't want to be working around this guy.

Duke Nukem said the most probable cause. He was playing with it and shot himself, then said he was cleaning it.

The number one rule of firearms safety was violated - always point the firearm in a safe direction.

Glad he did not kill himself!! Caveman hit it dead on. I do not understand how people make that mistake, especially one of my brothers in blue. I hope he wasn't just playing around. To journey985's comment: I am not sure what gun Durham carries, but they most departments do not carry guns with a safety anymore, except one built into the trigger. If they carry Glocks you have to pull the treigger before you can take it apart to clean, which could be what happened here, but that is why you take the magazine out, clear the chamber, clear the chamber, clear the chamber, and visually inspect the chamber, and then point the gun at something you are willing to shoot, just in case, and then pull the trigger and take apart.

Give him one bullet. Make him keep the bullet in his pocket.
