— Durham has fired a city employee who was arrested for allegedly driving while impaired in a city vehicle.

Spokeswoman Amy Blalock said Friday that Steve Gavin was terminated Thursday from his position with the Water & Sewer Maintenance Division after he was involved in an accident while returning home from a sewer blockage call Wednesday night.

A Durham police spokeswoman said Gavin, 53, was charged with DWI after he lost control of his maintenance truck around 11 p.m. near Charles and Roxboro streets.

The truck went across a ditch before its left side hit and broke a utility pole. Gavin was not injured, but there was serious damage to the truck.

Seems excessive unless it was his night to be "on call".
