Durham detention officer accused of having sex with inmate, fired

The Durham County Sheriff's Office has fired a detention center officer and charged him with having sex with an inmate, authorities said Friday.

DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham County Sheriff’s Office has fired a detention center officer and charged him with having sex with an inmate, authorities said Friday.

Matthew Ethelbert Toney, 59, is accused of having sex with an inmate in January. He was fired Nov. 8 and arrested Thursday.

Toney, who had worked with the Durham County Sheriff's Office since 1996, was released on a $30,000 bond.
