Durham deputies hurt in vehicle crash

Four people were hurt Wednesday when a vehicle collided with an unmarked Durham County sheriff's van on N.C. Highway 98, state troopers said.

DURHAM, N.C. — Four people were hurt Wednesday when a vehicle collided with an unmarked Durham County sheriff’s van on N.C. Highway 98, state troopers said.

The crash happened at 2:20 p.m. when a vehicle driven by Derrick Smith, 56, of Durham, crossed the center line and into opposing traffic. Troopers said Deputy Hayden Gould, 36, steered to avoid the vehicle, but Smith struck the van when he tried to correct his lane of travel.

Gould and two passengers in the van – Deputies Bradley Graberek and Casey Norwood – were taken to Duke Hospital with serious injuries.

Smith was taken to Duke Hospital with minor injuries.
