Durham crime rate dropped last year
Police Chief Jose Lopez said Monday that the rate of violent crimes in Durham dropped by 11 percent last year, and the overall crime rate was down by 3 percent.

There were 713 violent crimes per 100,000 residents last year, down from 813 in 2008, according to data Lopez presented to the Durham City Council. Property crimes per 100,000 residents dropped from 5,333 in 2008 to 5,203 last year.
The number of homicides in Durham fell from 24 to 21, while the number of reported rapes went from 71 to 67. Robberies fell from 889 in 2008 to 716, and aggravated assaults went from 826 to 801.
Although vehicle thefts and larcenies also dropped last year, the number of burglaries rose 4 percent, from 3,503 to 3,655.
Lopez noted the success of the Operation Bull's Eye targeted enforcement effort. Gun crimes in the targeted areas were down 53 percent in the three years of the program, reports of shots fired were down 51 percent and calls about drug activity were down 31 percent.
