Posted — UpdatedDURHAM, N.C. — Durham County residents can soon use their smartphones to test air quality under a project that will be unveiled Saturday.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency partnered with Durham County to install a prototype air-monitoring system in a bench outside the South Regional Library. The bench is a part of the Village Green Project, an effort by the EPA to develop next-generation air pollution monitoring systems.
The bench will be unveiled at the Village Green Project celebration on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The celebration includes a ribbon cutting, remarks from EPA officials and a chance to meet EPA scientists. Activities include energy games, interactive booths and appearances from mascots.
“We’re looking forward to a day of great fun, where our patrons can dig into science, try out the new bench and learn about air quality from experts,” said Tammy Baggett, Durham County Library director.
