Durham Comics Fest offers all-ages celebration of comics readers, creators

The seventh annual Durham Comics Fest starts up this Thursday and runs through next Wednesday with all kinds of activities for all ages.

The event, presented by the Durham County Library, is an all-ages celebration of comics readers and creators. Highlights include presentations and workshops by acclaimed cartoonists Jeremy Sorese (Steven Universe comics), Liz Prince (Tomboy), R. Sikoryak (Terms and Conditions), and Kriota Willberg (No Pain!). A screening of the documentary "Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines," with an appearance by director Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, also is planned.

The big day is Saturday at Southwest Regional Library, 3605 Shannon Rd., Durham, where you'll find lots of free and hands-on activities for kids. They include a comic swap and giveaway; local artist alley; a workshop where participants can create a quick autobiographical comic; prizes; and more.

Other events include a Trivia Night at Fullsteam Brewery for ages 21 and up, on Thursday; a Drink & Draw at Cocoa Cinnamon on Friday evening for all ages and skills; and that screening of the documentary "Wonder Women!" on Sunday at Southwest Regional.
