DURHAM, N.C. — A vehicle pursuit by a homeowner – resulting from the theft of a pair of sneakers – ended with a crash, a vehicle fire, two suspects in custody and a third on the run in Durham Wednesday night.

The homeowner's son attempted to sell a pair of high-end sneakers to three men when one of them snatched the shoes and took off, the homeowner said. A vehicle chase ensued, with the homeowner on the phone with 911 operators as he pursued the suspects. The chase ended when the suspect vehicle left the road, struck a tree and caught on fire near Cole Mill and Umstead roads.

Two of the three people in the vehicle were apprehended, including one after a foot pursuit. Authorities searched for the third suspect late Wednesday night.

The names of the suspects, who will face numerous charges from the N.C. State Highway Patrol and Durham police, were not immediately available.
