Durham boy wounded in drive-by shooting released from hospital

At least six bullets hit the home at 1508 Great Bend Drive in the drive-by shooting. Three toddlers were inside, where Monica Tatum runs Tatum's Christian Care, a licensed day care center.

Tatum and her husband said they have closed the day care indefinitely.

After the shooting, Tatum told a 911 dispatcher that the children weren't hurt.

"They're OK," she said. "One of them is just crying. They're really scared because it was loud, but I need to call these parents to come get these kids."

Later, she learned the 18-month-old had been hit in the leg by a bullet, and the child was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment.

"There's no value for human life. There really isn't," neighbor Beverly McGill said. "I think it's really, really sad that they would come through with no regard for what's going on."

In the 911 call, Tatum described a gray Honda passing by, with the gunman hanging out of the passenger-side window. She said there were several people inside the car.

Police haven't determined whether the house was targeted or was just hit by crossfire between two groups. Investigators have questioned some people but haven't named any suspects in the case.
