DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham County Board of Education on Tuesday began looking for its next school superintendent, seeking proposals from five to 10 search firms to assist in the process.

Former Superintendent Eric Becoats resigned at the end of December amid questions over his financial management of Durham Public Schools.

The board named Hugh Osteen, deputy superintendent of operations, as interim superintendent.

No time frame was set for naming a new superintendent, but board members said they would like to have someone in place by the start of the 2014-15 school year. Four seats on the board are up for election in May, however, which could affect the decision process, they said.
