DURHAM, N.C. — Multiple families are recovering Saturday morning after an apartment caught fire in Durham overnight Friday.

Crews arrived at the 2000 block of Broad Street shortly after 10 p.m., where they found a third-floor apartment on fire that damaged six apartments.

The fire left two children and nine people like Thomas Parham searching for a new place to stay.

"I am trying to find me a place to stay at," said Parham.

Parham lives in this building that caught on fire Friday night. His apartment was not damaged, but he says the power is completely out and probably will be for at least a week.

"I looked out my window. I heard some noise, and saw all the flames. The fire department was telling us to get out, 'get out.' said Parham.

It took the work of 50 firefighters to control the flames. One person was taken to the hospital and two dogs died in the fire.

"We're helping them with their immediate needs, said Cally Edwards, spokesperson, American Red Cross.

Edwards with the American Red Cross says events like these can also take a mental toll on victims, and they're there to help with that, too.

I hear about these stories where people lose everything in a moment. It is truly heartbreaking.

Eight dogs were also rescued from the apartments. Three of those dogs were revived by firefighters. Unfortunately, two dogs did not survive.

The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
