— A 4-year-old Durham girl who died after being hit by a car Monday night was excited to tell her father about her first day of kindergarten when she dashed across the street, a family member said Tuesday.

Jeri Dee Quick had been playing in the front yard of a home in the 3500 block of Dearborn Drive around 9:15 p.m. when police say she ran out into the road to greet him and was struck by a Honda Accord.

Quick's father had pulled up in a parking lot across the street from where the home and yelled at her to stop, her older cousin, Ashanti Ward, said.

"My husband was across the street with her father, and he was trying to tell her, 'No, no. Don't come across the street yet,'" Ward said. "By the fourth time (he said no), it was too late. The car came up the hill and hit her."

Quick, who attended Mt. Zion Christian Academy, was taken to Duke University Hospital, where she died Tuesday morning.

The Accord's driver, Jacqueline Lyons, 57, of Durham, was also taken to the hospital as a precaution. Police don't expect to file charges in the case, saying neither alcohol nor speed were factors.

Ward said the family is grieving the loss of a bubbly little girl whom she described as an angel.

"She was full of spirit, love, joy," she said. "She was our angel on earth, and we're going to miss her a lot."
