DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities have charged a 16-year-old from Durham with first-degree rape in connection with a Dec. 9 case in which he is accused of choking the alleged victim with her scarf.

Anthony Perry, of 3 Chintelly Court, also faces charges of first-degree sexual offense, assault by strangulation, assault by strangulation and two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

An arrest warrant for Perry does not list the age of the victim.

Perry is a student at Southern High School, and a spokeswoman for the school district said the crime allegedly happened on school property.

Durham Public Schools Superintendent Bert L'Homme said in a statement that the school is cooperating with police on the matter.

"It troubles me deeply to hear of these very serious allegations against one of our students. I understand that law enforcement were notified almost immediately after the alleged incident took place, and we are, of course, doing anything we can to support their investigation," he said. "Southern takes pride in being a place of learning and community, so any allegations such as this will be swiftly addressed."

Perry, who was arrested Monday, was being held Wednesday under a $500,000 bond at the Durham County Detention Center.

Parents of students at Southern High School were made aware of the charges this week after Perry's arrest, a school spokeswoman said.
