Duplin man pleads guilty to dog-fighting charge

Posted March 15, 2011

— A Duplin County man pleaded guilty Monday to a federal dog-fighting charge, authorities said.

Harry Louis Hargrove pleaded guilty to selling, delivering, possessing, training and transporting animals for the purposes of having them participate in an animal-fighting venture. He will be sentenced later.

Prosecutors said Hargrove trained pit bulls for fighting and sold them to people who sponsored dog fights. Undercover Duplin County Sheriff's Office deputies purchased a pit bull from him in April 2010.

Local authorities later searched Hargrove's property and found a blood-stained fighting pit, veterinary supplies and devices used to train fighting dogs and strengthen their jaws, prosecutors said.

Thirty-five dogs were also found on Hargrove's property, and 34 had to be euthanized because of injuries or aggressive behavior, prosecutors said. Dog carcasses were found, as was a battery-and-jumper-cable system used to electrocute dogs, they said.

“It is heartbreaking to see animals treated with such cruelty when individuals decide they can make money in the practice of dog fighting,” U.S. Attorney George Holding said in a statement.

pizno82, in your rush to show us how much you loathe the lives of non-human animals, your brain manufactured (aka “made up”) the thought that anyone here said that “animals are more important than humans”. (In fact, your anti-animal diatribe is so cruel, it makes me wonder if you’re the guy in the story.)

Then, you ignored the actual point...that we could SIMULTANEOUSLY work to relieve suffering of humans AND animals. It's not an "either or" situation and defending animals actually increases compassion for humans.

In the future, if you don’t understand the question...or you cannot articulate a logical and factual answer...you may want to consider avoiding embarrassment like this.

Didn't realize that you have to pick whether you oppose child abuse OR animal abuse...? You can oppose both, you know.

Shooting a deer is a relatively quick death, depending of course where it was shot. These dogs, on the other hand, were tortured by electrical devices and forced to fight each other for who knows how long.

rescuefan, totally agree about Vick. Such disregard for life (be it animal or human) tells a whole lot about a person.

"This is sick.....did he not learn anything from dufus Michael Vick? If the officials purchased a dog from him in April 2010 why wasn't something done sooner? How many pits senselessly suffered in the last 11 months..... hidious!

Yes, he learned that no matter how poorly you abuse an animal, you will still be a hero who has "served his time" and therefore should be forgiven for everything. And continue to be an idolized sports star.

The only reason dog fights are illegal is the boys in Raleigh have not figured a way to tax them.

pizno82.....statistics show that even though there are reports to Social Services about child abuse, they sit on their hands until it is too late to do something about it. How many reports have been in the news lately because Social Services didn't to their jobs? Abuse of anything living thing is wrong.....

I share your outrage over the abuse that children suffer. I have worked for years in a job to prevent child abuse. However, I think there is a very strong connection between abuse of children and abuse of animals. It seems to stem from a general lack of concern over how another living creature feels. In order to end the abuse of children, the abuse of animals need to stop as well.

No thanks I could careless about a cow or pig. Slaughter them thats what they are for. An animal is an animal, I dont care what you say they're not more valuable than a human being. I dont care what that guy or whomever does to a dog. Humans are more important and of more value.

pizno82, can you walk and chew gum at the same time? ;-)

If so, then people can simultaneously be outraged and work to prevent cruelty to both children and animals. It's not one or the other.

For example, you (a child abuse fighter) can also reduce the amount of cruelty and death towards animals tonight...when you think about what to eat for dinner. Have some spaghetti and marinara sauce and spare the cow or pig. :-)

Lets hook him up to the jumper cables and touch it off 1000 times or more (don't let him die) and see how he likes this kind of treatment. I think it would be good punishment.
