FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Dunn police officer has been charged with animal cruelty in connection with the shooting death of a dog, authorities said.

Patrick Cashwell, 46, of Florida Street in Fayetteville, was charged following an Oct. 28 incident in which a stray dog was shot and killed. Authorities said a fence separated the dog from Cashwell at the time of the shooting.

Cashwell, who is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 10, said his children were in the fenced yard, but the gate was open and the dog appeared to be aggressive.
