DUNN, N.C. — Since the 1970s, Harnett Trading Company in Dunn has held a New Year's Day luncheon open to the public.

The meal was originally just a few local farmers getting together to celebrate the new year. It has grown into a community celebration

Harnett Trading Company's Glenn Page said the meal started with just black eyed peas and eventually grew to include chitterlings, barbecue, turnips and collards.

Wednesday's luncheon was also a tribute in a way to Travis Page, one of the men who originally organized it. He passed away in 2012.

"He really enjoyed it," Harnett Trading Company's Ken Page said. "He loved seeing the people come eat. A lot of them are our customers and friends, but a lot of the folks are just locals that look forward to it every year. Everybody likes black eyed peas and collards on New Year's Day."

Last year, 500 people dined together at Harnett Trading Company. To be prepared this year, cooks had 500 sweet potatoes, about 100 pounds of barbecue and hundreds of pounds of other items.
