Dunn community gathers for annual New Year's Day lunch
Hundreds dine on a traditional New Year's Day meal of black eyed peas and collards at the Harnett Trading Company every year.
Posted — UpdatedThe meal was originally just a few local farmers getting together to celebrate the new year. It has grown into a community celebration
Harnett Trading Company's Glenn Page said the meal started with just black eyed peas and eventually grew to include chitterlings, barbecue, turnips and collards.
Wednesday's luncheon was also a tribute in a way to Travis Page, one of the men who originally organized it. He passed away in 2012.
Last year, 500 people dined together at Harnett Trading Company. To be prepared this year, cooks had 500 sweet potatoes, about 100 pounds of barbecue and hundreds of pounds of other items.
