Dump truck delivers power, phone outages to Durham neighborhood

Police said the driver still had the dump bed raised after dropping a load of mulch, and it snagged overhead power and phone lines.

DURHAM, N.C. — A dump-truck driver who didn't get the bed of his rig down soon enough took out electric and phone service to a Durham neighborhood Saturday afternoon, sheriff's deputies said.

The truck had delivered mulch to a landscaping business on Globe Road and was pulling away when the raised dump body snagged overhead wires at Globe and Page roads and pulled down two utility poles, officers reported.

About 100,000 telephone wires inside a cable broke, police said, and Duke Energy said power was knocked out to about 1,400 customers.

Deputies placed stop signs and directed traffic through the intersection.

The roads were cleared, and power restored to most customers by 10 p.m.
