Duke graduate student reports armed robbery

A Duke graduate student told police that a man armed with a handgun robbed him off campus Thursday night.

DURHAM, N.C. — A Duke graduate student told police that a man armed with a handgun robbed him off campus Thursday night.

According to a release from university police, the robbery took place at Campus Walk and LaSalle Street shortly after 11 p.m. The gunman took the student's backpack, which contained a laptop computer, and then ran toward Erwin Road, police said.

The student described the assailant as a black man in his 20s, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall. He had braided hair and wore a dark T-shirt and jeans. The student said a black woman female wearing a bright-colored blouse might have also been involved.

Duke police increased patrols in the area. Along with Durham police, they are investigating the reported robbery.
