Droid Turbo, Samsung Galaxy devices have best battery life

Consumer Reports recently tested cellphone batteries and found a few ways to help keep a phone battery going.

"The battery life for our phones in our ratings ranges from less than 8 hours to more than 24 hours," said Mike Gikas with Consumer Reports.

The Motorola Droid Turbo performed best in the tests. Three Samsung Galaxy devices, the S7 Edge, the S6 Active and the S7, all performed well. The Droid Turbo 2 was close behind.

All of the phones have rapid charging, which can bring a dying battery from 30 to 60 percent in 30 minutes.

According to Consumer Reports, no matter the phone, there are ways to get more juice from a device.

You can set the phone's screen brightness to auto, so it adjusts to indoor and outdoor lighting, or lower the brightness when possible.

You can also set the screen to "go to sleep" after 15 or 30 seconds of inactivity.

"Another tip, if you find yourself in an area with no signal, put your phone on airplane mode," said Gikas. "That disables all wireless connections, call, texts and emails."

Many newer phones also offer a power-saving or low-power mode, if a battery is running low.

According to Consumer Reports, even though the newer iPhones did well in the tests, other phone batteries latest longer.
