— A man sought in a fatal hit-and-run in Durham a week ago surrendered to police on Monday.

A man driving a 2012 black Ford Edge sped through a red light on South Driver Street last Monday and struck a Suzuki on Angier Avenue, police said. The impact of that crash caused the Suzuki to collide with a Cadillac, which then crashed into a building at the corner of the intersection.

The driver of the Edge, a rental car with New Jersey license plates, fled on foot after the wreck.

The driver of the Cadillac, Weldon Lewis Williams, 76, of Durham, died the following day at Duke University Hospital. The Suzuki's driver, Louise Shines, 66, of Durham, was critically injured in the wreck and remains hospitalized.

Quinton Tyrell Lester, 24, of Curtis Street in Durham, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and hit-and-run involving serious injuries.

Just look at today's Durham County Arrests on this website and tell me if the current punishments are enough to keep people from carrying concealed weapons, or felons from carrying or keeping weapons.

What is going to take for people to demand more from the Judges?

Do the suspended sentences ever come come back to bite? Where is the public outrage over all of the suspended sentences and probation for serious crimes?

His motivation to run was the fact that the state of NC has unbalanced penalties regarding DWI and hit-and-run violations. It's always best to run away to avoid the DWI. This needs to be changed.

What made him run? Perhaps it was his previous convictions,

"I wonder what Mr. Lestor's motivation was to make him run, leaving people hurt like that."

HIMSELF and nothing more! Glad they caught him.
