Driver-less car crashes, closing NC 55 in Durham

Posted August 28, 2014

— Westbound lanes of N.C. Highway 55 were closed at Cornwallis Road in Durham for more than two hours Thursday afternoon following a crash involving a car with no driver, police said.

An unoccupied car parked in a convenience store parking lot apparently went out of gear at about 2:30 p.m. and rolled down a hill onto N.C. 55, where it collided with a westbound work truck, police said. Two people in the truck were ejected and suffered serious injuries.

Police said westbound N.C. 55 reopened shortly before 5 p.m.

Hard to get ejected if you have a seat belt on. Not impossible, but rare. Especially two people in the same vehicle.

Says nothing about seat belt violations. I wonder if anybody was wearing one?

Come on now, saying "Driver-less car" makes it sound like this was actually a car on the road being driven without a person in it, such as what Google and other companies are testing.

Kind of a misleading headline, and I'm sure other people will run with it and tell us how dangerous driver-less cars are.
