— A Fayetteville woman was killed Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 95 near N.C. Highway 24 in Cumberland County.

Elvia Willison, 30, of Barefoot Road, was driving her Toyota Sequoia when the vehicle hit a bridge support in the median and caught fire, the state Highway Patrol said.

The impact of the crash killed Willison instantly, troopers said.

No other vehicles were involved.

Traffic moved slowly in both directions during the evening rush hour as firefighters and police responded to the crash.

Those bridge columns aren't protected by guardrail because they're so far from traffic. This is very unusual. It's possible for somebody to lose control and hit them, but pure chance unless intentional.

I saw the aftermath of this accident yesterday afternoon. We were on our way to eat and saw the traffic was backed up in both directions. The car was still there and was completely burned out. It did look to be terrible and by reading this article, I see that it was. May she rest in peace.
