BENSON, N.C. — A driver fell asleep at the wheel early Saturday morning on Interstate 40 and wrecked into construction equipment, authorities said.

The vehicle collided with a paving machine and a steam roller on the ramp with Interstate 95 southbound, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The vehicle overturned and the engine was thrown from the car.

Troopers said the driver from Fayetteville was taken to WakeMed, but his injuries did not appear to be serious.

Charges against the driver are pending.
