Driver faces DWI charge in Poole Road wreck

Posted September 30, 2011

— A Greensboro woman was charged with driving while impaired Friday following a wreck that closed Poole Road for more than nine hours, police said.

A car crashed into a utility pole in the 2900 block of Poole Road at about 2:30 a.m., splitting the pole and disrupting electrical service in the area, police said.

Witnesses said Mazzie Pauline Epps, 49, appeared to be intoxicated when left a nearby convenience store shortly before the wreck, according to a police report. The report also notes that Epps was driving 45 mph in a 35-mph zone.

Epps was taken to WakeMed for treatment of injuries that weren't life-threatening, police said.

She was charged with DWI and failure to maintain lane.

Poole Road reopened shortly before noon after crews replaced the broken utility pole.

I drive my motorcycle down Poole Rd all the time and each time I near that intersection I cringe. I've lost track of the number of times I've almost been hit, run off the road, or forced into another lane right there. I won't ever under any circumstances use the intersection coming from Donal Ross onto Poole because of how dangerous it is. It's the only place in the city where I fear for my life on a motorcycle. The city needs to do something about that intersection!!!

The intersections on Poole Rd between St George Rd and Beverly Dr you have to have fast reflexes in order to get out on to Poole Rd. It is extremely dangerous!

DOT needs to improve this section of Poole Rd. between Beverly Dr and Ashford Street. There was just an accident on that same section a week ago. Its hard to get out of Ashford St due to a homeowner's goofy decision to plant a small tree in way blocking driver's eyesight. Also no one can see down the hill comming from Donald Ross Dr when making a left. The intersection at Beverly Drive could use a left turn signal.
