Driver charged with plowing through Raleigh playground

— A man has been charged with driving through a school playground near Raleigh.

Charles Thomas Mapp, 39, of 160 Gaslight Creek, was charged with injury to real property and hit-and-run leaving the scene of property damage.

Police said a Ford pickup was southbound on South Boylan Avenue at about 3 a.m. Sunday struck a parked vehicle on the right side of the street, and the driver over-corrected and ran off the left side of the road through the playground at Project Enlightenment, at 501 S. Boylan Ave.

    That's probably why he left the scene. Now they can't charge him with DUI :(

    The article reads as though this was purely an accident, though the title of the article makes it sound as if it was deliberate. And he was charged under NC GS 14-127, which suggests willful intent to damage property, and NC GS 2-166(A), which suggests he hit a person (as that whole section relates to injury to people).

    Are the charges just wrong? Was he drinking? What's the real story here?
