ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. — A Lumberton man faces charges in the death of his girlfriend and another man in a wreck Monday that investigators say he caused.

State troopers said Marshall Clifford Heckel, 21, of Lumberton, and his girlfriend, Brittany Darilin Graybill, 20, of S. Lombard St. in Clayton, were eastbound on McQueen Road when Heckel drove into the path of a pickup at the intersection with Rennert Road.

Graybill, a student at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital, where she died.

The driver of the pickup, Fred Nelson Gibbs, 40, of Lumberton, was thrown from his vehicle when his seat belt broke. He died at the scene, troopers said.

Heckel was treated for his injuries and released from Southeast Regional Medical Center. He was charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle and failing to yield.
