Driver charged in wreck that killed two Monday

Posted July 7, 2010

— A Lumberton man faces charges in the death of his girlfriend and another man in a wreck Monday that investigators say he caused.

State troopers said Marshall Clifford Heckel, 21, of Lumberton, and his girlfriend, Brittany Darilin Graybill, 20, of S. Lombard St. in Clayton, were eastbound on McQueen Road when Heckel drove into the path of a pickup at the intersection with Rennert Road.

Graybill, a student at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital, where she died.

The driver of the pickup, Fred Nelson Gibbs, 40, of Lumberton, was thrown from his vehicle when his seat belt broke. He died at the scene, troopers said.

Heckel was treated for his injuries and released from Southeast Regional Medical Center. He was charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle and failing to yield.

People calling for further punishment is wrong, this is why we have become a police state with overcrowded jails.

Someday, I hope being ignorant will be illegal.

"Why Don't U Feel Sorry For Him? It Wasn't All His Fault."

It WAS all his fault. He was driving.... your guesses about "messing " is simply that, a guess. Even if you're right, it's no excuse.

Oh, and you Seem To Have a StUck ShiFT keY.

rhowerton, please! Who said she was "Messing With Him While Driving"?!!!! You say "They Need To Look At What She Done To Cause This". Oh my! Please be fair and besides - does it matter? It's really not our business. Knowing the details will not change the outcome and her family might be reading these comments and they will surely find things like this very hurtful. I believe our energies - aka our thoughts and prayers - need to be with all the families and friends, those in Mr/Pastor/Preacher (not sure) Gibbs' church and especially with this young man.

If you notice in the picture above the way she is sitting so close to him while I am sure he is driving is very unsafe. How can we say it might have been entirely his fault. picutes speak a thousand words.
