FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Pender County man has been charged in a November wreck that killed a Cumberland County teacher's assistant and injured her daughter, authorities said Monday.

Johnnie Clint Nabours, 44, of Burgaw, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving left of center, inspection violation and improper equipment. The state Highway Patrol also cited him for an overweight vehicle violation.

Nabours' Dodge pickup was westbound on Strickland Bridge Road on Nov. 19 when it went off the right side of the road and clipped a bicycle, police said. He then over-corrected and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Impala near the intersection with Jenna-Shane Drive, police said.

The driver of the Impala, Tara Thompson, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 11-year-old daughter, Shanice, was pinned inside the vehicle, and firefighters had to cut the roof off the car to pull her from the vehicle.

Tara Thompson was a teacher's assistant at Seventy-First Classical School, and police said she was on her way to school at the time of the wreck.

Nabours and two passengers in his pickup also were injured in the wreck. The bicyclist wasn't injured.
