Driver charged in motorcyclist's death

Posted July 9, 2013

— The State Highway Patrol filed charges Tuesday against a driver in connection with a fatal crash last week that killed a motorcyclist.

Hugh Bailey, 89, of 4111 Rock Quarry Road in Raleigh, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Bailey tried to turn into a driveway in the 1600 block of Old Garner Road on Friday morning, and a westbound motorcyclist ran into the passenger side of his 1996 Ford pickup, authorities said.

William Joseph DeGrace, 33, of Garner, was pronounced dead at the scene.

I feel sorry for the old man.

This 89-year-old is probably safer than most teenage drivers out there, so be a little kinder with your criticism. Motorcycles are sometimes hard to see and this type of thing could happen to a motorist of any age.

This is why I feel elderly drivers should be tested more often.. This is another senseless tragedy where yet one more motorcyclist has to pay the ultimate price for someone else's lack of paying attention....

    Another senseless death.
89 and still driving? Careless move or "did not see him" excuse!

Prayers out to the DeGrace family.
