SEATTLE — A man accused of driving off a Seattle freeway ramp and killing a teen who was sleeping inside a tent has been charged with vehicular homicide and hit-and-run.
The Seattle Times reports (https://goo.gl/uERWop ) that prosecutors say Oscar Gutierrez-de Jesus was drunk when he drove off Interstate 5 into a median at the Northeast 50th Street exit early Monday, hitting the tent and a tree.
Charges claim there were no indications that Gutierrez-de Jesus had tried to brake. The 33-year-old allegedly fled and took a bus home.
Police found 19-year-old Walter Burton's body and an abandoned car at the scene.
Hours after the crash, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray visited the scene and said the incident underscored the need to find safe shelter for hundreds who are living on the streets.
Gutierrez-de Jesus was arrested later Monday at his Seattle home. Police say he showed signs of impairment.
He remains in jail on $250,000 bail and is set to be arraigned on the charges later this month.
