RALEIGH, N.C. — Fifty-eight people have applied to be the next Wake County manager, officials said Monday.

Former County Manager David Cooke retired in November after 13 years overseeing county operations.

The Board of Commissioners hired Tallahassee, Fla.-based Bob Murray and Associates to help search for a new manager, and officials said Monday they are still on track to select someone by March or April.

Interim County Manager Joe Durham didn't apply to become Cooke's permanent successor.
