— Officials are trying to determine the cause of a fire that forced more than two dozen people from their apartments in Apex Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire at the Lake Cameron Apartments, located near the intersection of Hwy. 55 and Hwy. 64.

Twelve units were impacted displacing 25 residents including families with children. No one was hurt.

Displaced residents have relocated to hotels for the next couple of days.

The property manager said there was no damage to the interior of the units; however, power was shut off while repairs were completed on the outside of the building. The small fire melted the siding on one side of the building.

Apartment owners need to establish smoker and non-smoker units for their residents. Then make sure ALL residents have renters insurance. Plus, charge the smokers a higher rental rate because they are more of a "fire hazard" then the non-smokers. All these fires lately have all been cause by careless humans, either smokers, grills too close to buildings, etc. ENFORce the fire Rules and Regulations.
