Downtown Marriott opens in Raleigh

Posted August 27, 2008

— Four weeks after its unofficial opening, the Raleigh Marriott City Center held its grand opening Wednesday, kicking off weeks of celebration downtown.

The adjacent convention center will hold its grand opening next Friday as part of the Raleigh Wide Open event.

"Four years ago, we set out to determine the lasting future of our city's downtown core, and as a result of an enormous amount of passion and commitment, today we celebrate the completion of an important anchor for that vision," Mayor Charles Meeker said in a statement. "The Raleigh Marriott City Center is a perfect example of how the public and private sectors can work together to realize goals of great significance to our community."

The 16-story hotel features 400 rooms, including 20 suites, and more than 15,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 9,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom.

The floor isn't white. It's very nice inside and great investment by the city.

Not many people going to pay 250.00 a night. Even if they attend the convention center-- they will look for a cheaper place to stay. Their travel allocation would not allow them that much per night. They find a cheaper hotel and catch a taxi downtown. The mayor is in his ivory tower. Downtown is dead to the local citizens and he should admit it. They would have increased traffic more had they built a super wal-mart.

What exactly makes this place a 4 star hotel? the footage and entrance are underwhelming.

And $250 a night? How are the PE teachers going to be able to afford staying there for 4 nights? What PE teacher has a $1,000 to blow on a hotel room? A pal of mine who deals in conventions have described a majority of the bookings in Raleigh as "Brown Bag Specials." Times are tough and somehow we're expecting the Money Gods to fly into RDU and toss cash around like PacMan Jones.

The outside isn't anything spectacular, but there is definitely worse out there. The inside is quite nice. I went to it last week to have some drinks in the bar. I found it to be a very nice Marriot. Maybe you should venture out to it and seeing it in person, before basing it on some not so great pictures.

At what this project has cost the taxpayers of this city, I think we have paid the right to be critical!

I hope WRAL does a follow up when the convention center opens. They did mention tonight that room rates were 249.00 per night, it will be interesting to see what they jack it up to that night.

WOW... that white floor in the lobby and that furniture really makes the hotel look cold. It should be been done nicely with some carpet, very plush chairs and sofa and a big fireplace for the cold winters that Raleigh can get. It does not have a warm Luxary Hotel feel, it looks like a high rise office or bank building inside......The Homewood Suites looks so much better inside at Crabtree....

The ouside is so beige I bet even Cary would approve.

....as long as they took down that big sign....
